Introduction

Ubuntu 21.10 is codenamed “Impish Indri” is an adjective that means “inclined to do slightly naughty things for fun”. It has been released on October 14th, 2021 by Canonical.

It is the final interim release before the next Ubuntu LTS release due to be released in April, 2022. This release will get support for 9 months with major bug fixes, critical security patches, and new app releases.

Ubuntu 21.10 is 25th Ubuntu release since its inception. The second version is to be named after an animal beginning with the letter I, and the first was Ubuntu 8.10 “Intrepid Ibex”.

Let’s talk about the new features in Ubuntu 21.10

Ubuntu 21.10 comes with PHP 8 and GCC 11 including full support for static analysis. Also, includes Linux kernel 5.13, Firefox v93 (installed as snap package instead of a deb package), LibreOffice v7.2.1, Thunderbird v91.1.2.

It also comes Gnome 40 as the default desktop, including a new and improved Activities Overview design. Workspaces are now arranged horizontally, and the overview and app grid are accessed vertically.

  2. Libvirt has been updated to version 7.6
  3. Open vSwitch has been updated to 2.16
  4. Apache has been updated to 2.4.48
  5. QEMU is updated to the 6.0 release
